5 Things You’ll Never Have in a Relationship with a Narcissist
In today’s post, we’re diving into the five essential things you will never, ever have in a relationship with a narcissist. Now, this applies whether the narcissist is an intimate partner, a parent, a sibling, a friend, or even a co-worker. These relationships can vary, but the behaviours you experience are always eerily similar. If you’ve ever wondered why your relationship with a narcissist feels like a constant rollercoaster, this will help shed some light on it.
What are the five things missing in any narcissistic relationship? Let's jump right in.
1. Intimacy
First up, let’s talk about intimacy. Now, when I say intimacy, I don’t just mean physical intimacy or sex. We’re talking about that deep emotional connection, where two people are genuinely vulnerable with each other. That’s something you’ll never have with a narcissist. At the beginning, during the love-bombing phase, they make it seem like they’re all in, right? They’ll make you feel like you're the centre of their world. They’re attentive, they ask you about your feelings, they’re physically affectionate, and you think, “Wow, this is real. This person gets me.” But it’s all an act.
Here’s the thing with narcissists: they mimic intimacy. They know how to act like they care, but it’s all surface-level. They learn what you like, what makes you feel connected, and they give it to you — for a while. But deep down, they’re never emotionally invested. It’s a transactional relationship. They’re doing it to get something from you: your admiration, your attention, your praise. True intimacy is a two-way street, where both people feel safe to be vulnerable, but that’s not possible with a narcissist. They don’t want emotional vulnerability because it means they’re not in control.
What’s more, as soon as you start needing something from them — real emotional support, empathy, or understanding — they’ll pull back. They’ll either make you feel guilty for needing anything, or they’ll just ghost you altogether. They want you to think they’re the perfect partner, friend, or parent, but they’ll never give you true intimacy. It’s always going to be about what they can get out of the relationship.
2. Security
The second thing you’ll never have with a narcissist is security. And I don’t just mean physical security — though in some cases, that’s an issue too — but emotional security. You’ll never feel safe in the relationship because, with a narcissist, you’re always walking on eggshells. They thrive on keeping you off-balance. One day, everything’s fine, and the next, you’re in a silent treatment or being accused of something you didn’t even do.
Why do they do this? Simple: insecurity keeps you chasing after their approval. It keeps you guessing, constantly trying to figure out what you did wrong and how you can make things better. But here’s the kicker — no matter what you do, it’s never going to be enough. Narcissists are masters of moving the goalposts. They’ll make you think that if you just try harder, or if you change this one thing about yourself, the relationship will be fine. But it’s a game you’ll never win.
In a healthy relationship, there’s a sense of stability. You know where you stand with the other person, and you trust that they’re not going to abandon you over a minor disagreement. But with a narcissist, you’ll always feel like everything is on the verge of falling apart. They want you to be scared of losing them because it gives them control. They need you to depend on them for validation, and keeping you insecure ensures that you’ll keep seeking it.
3. Respect
Respect is another thing you’ll never have in a relationship with a narcissist. Now, I’m sure you’ve experienced moments where they seem to respect you, maybe even admire you. But those moments are fleeting. In reality, narcissists don’t respect anyone. They can’t. Respecting someone else would mean acknowledging that the other person has value, independent of their approval, and that’s a concept they simply can’t grasp.
For a narcissist, everything revolves around them. You exist to serve their needs, and your feelings, thoughts, and desires are secondary. In fact, the more you shine, the more they’ll work to dim your light. If you achieve something, they’ll downplay it or find a way to take credit for it. Why? Because your success threatens their fragile ego. They can't stand to see you feeling good about yourself without their approval. If you’re too happy or too confident, they’ll find a way to knock you down a peg.
In a healthy relationship, respect means valuing the other person’s opinions, even when you disagree. It means giving each other space to grow and recognising each other’s strengths. But in a relationship with a narcissist, they’ll always belittle you, criticize you, and make you feel like you’re not good enough. They’ll never respect your boundaries or your individuality because, in their world, everything is about them.
4. Peace
There’s no peace with a narcissist. Ever. Narcissists thrive on chaos. Even when everything seems to be going well, they’ll find a way to stir things up. If you’ve ever been in a relationship with a narcissist, you’ve probably noticed that they hate calm and stability. They’ll say they want peace, but their actions always create drama.
Why do they do this? Because drama keeps the focus on them. It feeds their need for attention. Whether it’s picking a fight out of nowhere or starting drama with other people in your life, they’re always creating chaos. Peace makes them anxious because it means they’re not the centre of attention. If things are too calm, they feel irrelevant. So, they’ll provoke you, push your buttons, and create problems where there aren’t any, just to get a reaction.
In a normal relationship, peace is the default. You can disagree, but there’s a sense of calm and understanding that underlies everything. With a narcissist, the drama is constant. You’ll never have that sense of stability or calm because they’ll always find a way to disrupt it.
5. Happiness
Last but not least, you’ll never have happiness with a narcissist. Why? Because your happiness makes them miserable. A narcissist can’t stand to see you happy, especially if that happiness has nothing to do with them. If you’re happy, it means you’re independent, and that threatens their control over you.
Whether it’s a holiday, a special occasion, or just something as simple as enjoying a quiet evening at home, they’ll find a way to ruin it. They’ll pick a fight, cancel plans at the last minute, or just give you the cold shoulder. It’s not an accident. They want to remind you that they control your happiness. And the worst part? They’ll often ruin your happiness just when you’re starting to feel good about yourself, as if to say, “Don’t forget who’s in charge here.”
Final Thoughts
In a healthy relationship, intimacy, security, respect, peace, and happiness are foundational. But in a relationship with a narcissist, these things are either weaponised or completely absent. If you’ve found yourself in a relationship where you’re constantly questioning your own worth, feeling on edge, or googling their behaviour late at night, it’s time to take a step back. You deserve better than living in the chaos and emotional turmoil that comes with a narcissistic relationship. You deserve real love, respect, and peace — things you’ll never get with a narcissist.
