Narcissistic abuse doesn’t just affect your emotional health—it can deeply affect your physical well-being, too. In many cases, survivors of narcissistic abuse experience physical symptoms that stem directly from the chronic stress and trauma caused by their abuser’s behaviour. These physical symptoms are often overlooked or misattributed to other causes, which is why it’s important to recognise them as potential warning signs that your body is under duress.

In this blog, I’ll dive into six common physical symptoms of narcissistic abuse and offer some tips on how to deal with them. If you’re experiencing any of these signs, it’s essential to take them seriously and prioritise your health as you begin to heal. So let’s explore these physical symptoms together—because recognising what your body is telling you is an important first step in reclaiming your health and well-being.

1. Chronic Fatigue and Energy Drain

Have you ever felt like you’re running on empty all the time, no matter how much rest you get? One of the most common and debilitating physical symptoms of narcissistic abuse is chronic fatigue. It’s more than just feeling tired after a busy day—it’s an ongoing, overwhelming sense of exhaustion that doesn’t seem to go away, no matter how much you sleep.

Living under constant stress and emotional manipulation with a narcissist can put your body in a state of hypervigilance. This means your body is constantly on high alert, as if you’re always anticipating danger or conflict. This heightened state of stress uses up your energy reserves, leaving you feeling mentally and physically drained. Your mind and body are working overtime to keep up with the emotional turmoil, and over time, this takes a significant toll.

If you’re constantly feeling drained, it’s essential to acknowledge that it’s not just in your head. The body can only handle so much stress before it starts to break down. Chronic fatigue can even make simple tasks feel overwhelming, further contributing to feelings of frustration and helplessness. I can personally relate to this one—after years of stress, I started grinding my teeth at night without even realising it. Eventually, I developed severe jaw pain, and it even became difficult to open my mouth. After consulting with a dentist and a specialist, I discovered that my jaw had developed fluid buildup and a slipped disc, both of which were caused by the constant pressure of grinding my teeth.

Teeth grinding is often linked to emotional stress, and for those living with narcissistic abuse, it can become a chronic issue. The emotional toll of trying to navigate the unpredictability and manipulation of a narcissist can manifest in physical tension, particularly in the jaw and facial muscles. If you’re experiencing this, I highly recommend getting a mouthguard. It’s a simple and effective way to protect your teeth and relieve some of the pressure on your jaw. In some cases, seeking medical help, such as Botox injections, can offer relief, though I found that it can change the shape of your face by reducing muscle mass in the jaw.

3. Insomnia

Insomnia is a pervasive issue for many survivors of narcissistic abuse. The constant stress and anxiety that come with living with a narcissist can keep your mind racing long after you’ve gone to bed. You may find yourself lying awake at night, replaying conversations or wondering what the narcissist is doing. Your mind refuses to shut off, and sleep becomes elusive.

The thing about insomnia is that it doesn’t just affect your energy levels—it also has a profound impact on your overall health. Chronic sleep deprivation can weaken your immune system, leaving you more vulnerable to illnesses, and it can also affect your mood, making you irritable and easily triggered. Over time, this lack of sleep can also hinder your ability to focus, reduce productivity, and make everyday tasks feel even more exhausting.

Finding ways to calm your mind before bed is essential in overcoming insomnia. Creating a nighttime routine that includes calming activities—like meditation, reading, or journaling—can help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. If insomnia persists, seeking professional help might be necessary to address underlying trauma and anxiety that are affecting your ability to rest.

4. Digestive Issues

Another common physical symptom of narcissistic abuse is digestive problems. You might find yourself constantly battling an upset stomach, bloating, or even conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Stress has a direct impact on the digestive system, and when you’re constantly under emotional strain, it can wreak havoc on your gut health.

The body’s stress response—whether it’s anxiety, tension, or fear—can lead to a range of digestive issues. For instance, stress hormones can disrupt the balance of bacteria in your gut, leading to issues like nausea, constipation, or diarrhoea. If you’re struggling with digestive problems and can’t pinpoint a physical cause, emotional stress may be the culprit.

Addressing these issues starts with recognising the link between stress and your digestive health. Taking steps to manage stress, such as practicing relaxation techniques, can help. You might also want to consider dietary changes that support gut health, such as eating more fibre or reducing processed foods. If digestive symptoms persist, seeking advice from a healthcare professional is crucial to rule out other causes and begin treatment.

5. Weight Fluctuations

Weight fluctuations are common among those experiencing narcissistic abuse. Some people may gain weight due to emotional eating as a way to cope with the overwhelming feelings that come with living in a toxic environment. Others may experience rapid weight loss due to stress-induced loss of appetite or constant anxiety that leaves them unable to eat properly.

The body’s response to trauma and stress can affect its relationship with food in complex ways. Emotional eating can provide temporary relief from the emotional pain caused by the narcissist’s behaviour, but it can also lead to unhealthy eating habits and weight gain. On the other hand, constant stress can suppress appetite, leading to weight loss and nutritional deficiencies.

It’s important to recognise these fluctuations as a direct response to emotional and physical stress. If you’re struggling with your weight, it’s helpful to work with a nutritionist or therapist who can help you understand the connection between your emotions and your eating habits. Taking steps to improve your emotional well-being and develop a healthier relationship with food is key to managing these physical changes.

If you’re constantly feeling run down or catching every bug that goes around, it might be a sign that your body is overextended and that your immune system is weakened.

Chronic stress, particularly the kind experienced in narcissistic abuse, can lead to a weakened immune system because the body’s resources are being diverted to handle the stress. When your immune system is compromised, you may find yourself getting sick more often or struggling to recover from illnesses as quickly as you did before.

If you’re getting sick frequently, it’s important to take steps to boost your immune system. This includes getting adequate rest, eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, staying hydrated, and managing stress as much as possible. If illnesses persist, don’t hesitate to consult with a healthcare professional to ensure you’re not dealing with an underlying condition that requires treatment.
